Derick, Lincoln and I left Thursday morning. We made a couple of stops on the way for things that we needed and made it to our hotel in Chesapeake at around 4. {side note- We decided to stay further out for a few reasons: the cost, the quality and a friend's recommendation. I am glad we did. The hotel (Hyatt) was really nice and was a good clean place for Lincoln and his asthma. After seeing the hotels on the beach, we were glad we didn't stay there with kids.} We immediately headed out to go to the beach for a quick evening visit. Lincoln was so excited! He loved the beach immediately. He has always loved water, and with an endless supply of sand thrown in the mix, he was in heaven. After we left the beach, we went out to dinner at a place called Paradocks. We ran a few errands (our hotel was surrounded by pretty much every store you could want) and then went back to our room. Sam and Jenae made it to the hotel at around 11 p.m. After a few minutes of hellos and chatting, we all went to bed.
On Friday morning, we all got ready and headed to the beach! Derick had looked up some other more family-friendly beaches to try, so we headed to one called Sandbridge. It was really nice, in a mostly residential area, but was busy! But that was ok. We found a little area to play and had a blast for a few hours. We then headed back to the hotel for naps. In the evening, we decided to head to the boardwalk and rent bikes. This was one of the highlights of the trip. They had these bike-car things (I can't remember what they were actually called) and we were all able to fit into one! Lincoln and Emmitt thought that their basket on the front was pretty awesome, and I don't blame them. We rode up and down the boardwalk for an hour and it was a blast. We then headed back to the hotel and ordered pizza. Derick and Sam picked it up while Jenae and I got the kiddos ready for bed. It was pretty late by this point. We all hung out in our room (OH, I forgot to mention that the hotel gave us adjoining rooms, which was awesome and convenient), ate, and watched the Olympics.
On Saturday, we went to the Children's Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth. It was so fun for the kids. They had so many things for the kids to do, including lots of real-life adult occupations and scenarios that they could try out, including a vet, bank, grocery store, fire station, music room, etc. After the museum, we got lunch and went back to the hotel for naps. That evening, we ran errands and then headed back to the beach for one last time. Derick and I had found a quiet evening beach spot (with free parking!) the night that we had arrived, so that's where we went and it was awesome. We practically had the whole beach to ourselves and we all enjoyed the nice evening weather. After that, it was back to the hotel and some Fazoli's for dinner.
On Sunday, we packed up and left the hotel just after 9:00 a.m. We headed over to Jamestown (where the first English settlement was....or where Pocahontas was!) which was only an hour away, to explore. Yorktown and historic Williamsburg are right there nearby too, but we had limited time, were tired, and they are expensive to visit. So we chose Jamestown. It was cool. They had a recreated site that included a little Indian village, actual ships that we could explore, and a huge fort, where the Englishmen lived. The actual site where they settled is available to see too, but it would have cost more money and there isn't much to see. It's a National park and an archaeological dig, and we needed something to keep the kiddos entertained. After exploring Jamestown, we headed home. Derick and I made it home around 6:00, and Sam and Jenae made it home around 11:00. We were exhausted, but had the best trip and wish it could have been a day or two longer!
There are TONS of pictures! I think I counted 86. He he....
Day 1: After arriving
Day 2, part 1: Beach
Derick and Sam with their boys. They were out there a lot.
All 3 kiddos playing in the sand.
Mila pretty much preferred the sand over the water the whole time.
Lincoln loved running around in the sand.
He also loved smashing sand castles.
Lincoln and Emmitt chasing seagulls.
Playing in a big hole.
Mila was so excited to collect sea shells. They were just pieces, but she was still excited about it.
Derick and Sam built this and then let the kids knock it down.
Day 2, part 2: Boardwalk Bike Ride
Day 3, part 1: Children's Museum
We probably could have stayed in the train room for our whole visit and the little boys would have been satisfied. They loved it! There was this tunnel that allowed them to crawl out into the display and look at it from a bubble in the middle.
Putting out "fires".
Veterinarian Lincoln.
The Curious George room.
Playing with Tinkertoys. I love Lincoln's concentration face. We decided that we need to ask Santa to bring some of these.
The music room. It was very loud in there!
Steering the ship.
Fishing.
Lincoln and I are inside a giant bubble. Can you see it?
There were some free activities going on outside on this particular day. LIncoln loves trains, so we were shocked when he did NOT want to ride this one. I think he was just exhausted.
If you look closely you can see him crying. They made two laps with him screaming and then had to let him off to finish the ride. Well, we chose to let him off, for his sake.
Day 3, part 2: Beach
suddenly deciding to try out crawling and laying in the water:
We were shocked when Lincoln let Derick bury him in the sand!
Then Emmitt decided he wanted to try.
Jenae and I felt so bad. Each of us put sunblock on our husband's back, and that is where they got the most burned! The burns were all splotchy and you could even see finger prints where we had rubbed it in. Ooops! Guess we need to do better next time!
Boat-watching.
We found this sand castle. Wish I could say that we made it {I was tempted to}.
Day 4: Jamestown
Checking out the Indian huts.
Grinding corn.
In front of the Susan Constant. It was cool to go inside and see how they lived on the ship and how it worked.
17th century bowling. Lincoln rolled the ball at first....
...but when it didn't knock anything down he decided to go over and knock them down himself.
